Position Summary
The Certified Surgical Technologist (CST®) functions as an integral member of the perioperative team and is responsible for providing surgical instrumentation and assistance during operative procedures. The CST maintains the sterile field, anticipates the needs of the surgeon, and supports safe, efficient patient care throughout the surgical experience.
Essential Responsibilities
Prepare operating rooms for surgical procedures.
Gather, inspect, and arrange surgical instruments, supplies, and equipment.
Establish and maintain a sterile field.
Pass instruments, sutures, and supplies during surgical procedures.
Anticipate the needs of surgeons and surgical team members.
Perform surgical counts according to policy.
Assist with patient positioning, prepping, and draping.
Participate in room turnover and preparation for subsequent cases.
Assist with specimen handling according to policy.
Support compliance with infection prevention and patient safety standards.
Participate in on-call coverage as assigned.
Demonstrate teamwork and collaboration with physicians, anesthesia providers, nursing staff, and support personnel.
Qualifications
Required
Graduate of an accredited Surgical Technology program.
Current Certified Surgical Technologist (CST®) credential.
Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
Ability to effectively communicate with patients, physicians, and team members.
Preferred
One or more years of recent surgical technologist experience.
Experience in Orthopedics, General Surgery, Gynecology, Urology, ENT, Podiatry, and Endoscopy.
Experience with total joint replacement procedures and advanced orthopedic instrumentation.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Strong knowledge of surgical instrumentation and aseptic technique.
Ability to anticipate surgical team needs.
Excellent organizational and critical thinking skills.
Commitment to patient safety and quality outcomes.
Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced environment.
Call Requirements
Participation in weekday, weekend, and holiday call rotation as assigned.
Ability to respond within established hospital response times.
