DIRECTOR OF CARDIAC ANESTHESIOLOGY

The Department of Anesthesiology at Albany Medical Center is seeking an accomplished, board-certified cardiac anesthesiologist to serve as Division Director of Cardiac Anesthesiology. This individual will provide strategic and operational leadership for a growing cardiac anesthesia program while partnering closely with Cardiothoracic Surgery, Structural Heart, Interventional Cardiology, Perfusion Services, and Hospital Administration.
The successful candidate will be an innovative physician leader with a demonstrated track record of clinical excellence, faculty development, education, quality improvement, and academic scholarship. The Division Director will be responsible for advancing the clinical, educational, and research missions of the Division while ensuring exceptional perioperative care for patients undergoing complex cardiac and thoracic procedures.
This leadership role offers the opportunity to shape the future of cardiac anesthesiology within a nationally recognized academic medical center and to mentor the next generation of anesthesiologists, fellows, residents, and advanced practice providers.
Clinical Leadership:
- Provide oversight of cardiac anesthesia services across Albany Medical Center.
- Lead the development and implementation of initiatives that enhance patient safety, quality, efficiency, and outcomes in cardiac perioperative care.
- Collaborate with Cardiothoracic Surgery, Structural Heart, Heart Failure, and Interventional Cardiology leadership to optimize patient care pathways and program growth.
- Support expansion of services involving valve repair and replacement, mechanical circulatory support, transcatheter interventions, aortic surgery, heart failure therapies, and other advanced cardiovascular procedures.
- Maintain clinical excellence through active participation in cardiac anesthesia practice.
Operational Management:
- Manage day-to-day clinical operations of the Cardiac Anesthesiology Division.
- Ensure adequate staffing, scheduling, and coverage for cardiac operating rooms and procedural areas.
- Collaborate with departmental leadership regarding strategic planning, resource allocation, and capital equipment acquisition.
- Develop standardized protocols and evidence-based practices to improve perioperative outcomes.
- Monitor divisional performance metrics and quality indicators.
Education and Mentorship:
- Provide mentorship and professional development for faculty, fellows, residents, and students.
- Support educational initiatives within Albany Medical College and the Department of Anesthesiology.
- Foster excellence in perioperative echocardiography education and cardiac anesthesia training.
- Promote a culture of lifelong learning, collaboration, and professional growth.
Research and Academic Development:
- Advance scholarship and innovation within the Division of Cardiac Anesthesiology.
- Collaborate with investigators across Albany Medical Center and Albany Medical College on clinical, translational, and outcomes-based research.
- Promote participation in multicenter studies, quality registries, and clinical trials.
- Support faculty development in academic productivity, publications, presentations, and grant funding.
Faculty Recruitment and Engagement:
- Lead recruitment, onboarding, and retention efforts for cardiac anesthesiology faculty.
- Foster a culture of collaboration, accountability, wellness, and inclusion.
- Support faculty career advancement through mentorship and leadership development.
Quality and Safety:
- Partner with institutional quality and patient safety teams to promote best practices in perioperative care.
- Maintain and enhance evidence-based ERAS and perioperative optimization protocols for cardiac surgical patients.
- Lead continuous quality improvement initiatives and ensure compliance with national standards and accreditation requirements.

Required Qualifications:
- MD, DO, or foreign equivalent.
- Board Certification in Anesthesiology.
- Fellowship training in Adult Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology
- Certification in Advanced Perioperative Transesophageal Echocardiography.
- Eligibility for unrestricted licensure in New York State.
- Demonstrated leadership experience within an academic or large clinical practice setting.
- Excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Established record of academic achievement, including teaching, research, and scholarly activity.
- Experience leading multidisciplinary clinical teams.
- Experience in quality improvement, program development, and operational management.
- Eligible for appointment as an Associate Professor level or Full Professor

- Competitive base salary range: $525,000k-$625,000k
- Work within flexible staffing pattern within 40-hr work week
- Call and No Call tracks available
- Plenty of additional opportunities for extra call and overtime pay
- Annual bonus of 5% of base salary
- Generous sign-on bonus up to $45,000 and relocation up to $10,000.
