CHI Health and Creighton University School of Medicine are seeking an accomplished Division Chief of Cardiac Anesthesiology to lead and advance a high-volume, academic cardiovascular program in Omaha, Nebraska. This leadership role offers the opportunity to shape a premier cardiac anesthesia division, driving excellence in clinical care, education, and program development within a Level I Trauma Center and flagship academic institution.
The Division Chief will provide strategic leadership while maintaining an active clinical presence in cardiac anesthesiology, partnering closely with cardiac surgery, cardiology, and institutional leadership. This position offers the opportunity to lead a high-acuity cardiac anesthesiology program while maintaining an active clinical role in advanced cardiovascular procedures within a supportive academic environment.
Practice Environment
- 391-bed Level I Trauma Center and flagship academic medical center
- Department of 23 anesthesiologists and 27 CRNAs in a care team model
- Dedicated team of 6–8 cardiac anesthesiologists
- Full spectrum of advanced cardiac procedures, including structural heart and mechanical circulatory support
- Academic medical center with a newly approved Anesthesiology Residency Program launching 2026
- EPIC EMR across the system
Leadership & Administrative Responsibilities
- Lead and expand the Division of Cardiac Anesthesiology, aligning with institutional clinical and academic priorities
- Partner with cardiac surgery, cardiology, and hospital leadership to optimize perioperative cardiac care delivery
- Oversee faculty recruitment, retention, mentorship, and professional development within the cardiac division
- Develop and implement clinical protocols and care pathways for cardiac and structural heart procedures
- Ensure compliance with regulatory and accreditation standards (CMS, Joint Commission, STS-related quality initiatives)
- Drive quality improvement, outcomes tracking, and performance benchmarking within the cardiac program
- Manage resource allocation, staffing models, and strategic growth initiatives
- Represent the institution at national meetings, specialty societies, and academic collaborations
Clinical Responsibilities
- Maintain an active clinical practice in cardiac anesthesiology
- Provide anesthetic care for a full spectrum of adult cardiac procedures, including:
o CABG and valve surgeries
o Structural heart procedures (TAVR, MitraClip, Watchman, other)
o Complex aortic surgery
o Change ECMO) - Perform and interpret advanced intraoperative TEE
- Collaborate in a multidisciplinary heart team model to optimize perioperative outcomes
Academic & Educational Responsibilities
- Provide leadership in cardiac anesthesia education within a newly established residency program
- Develop and oversee cardiac-focused curriculum, simulation, and training pathways
- Teach and mentor residents and medical students
- Opportunity to develop a future cardiac anesthesia fellowship program
- Support faculty engagement in academic advancement and leadership development
Research & Scholarly Activity
- Promote and expand research initiatives in cardiac anesthesiology and perioperative cardiovascular care
- Support faculty and trainees in scholarly publication and national presentations
- Participate in or lead multidisciplinary clinical research and quality initiatives
Qualifications
- MD or DO degree
- Completion of an ACGME-accredited Anesthesiology Residency
- Fellowship training in Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology
- Board certification in Anesthesiology (ABA)
- Advanced Perioperative TEE certification (NBE) required
- Demonstrated leadership experience in cardiac anesthesiology or related programs
- Eligible for medical licensure in Nebraska
